Dennis Von Brooks 67 of Amarillo died Sunday, November 29, 2015 in Amarillo. Services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, December 5, 2015 in the Ballroom of Virgil Henson Activities Center, Russell Long Blvd Canyon, Texas 79015. Arrangements are by Angel Funeral Home 2209 S. Arthur St. Amarillo, Texas 79103.

Dennis Brooks was born to Vermadine and Voyd Brooks on October 08, 1948 in Modesto, CA. He, his mother and siblings moved to Lubbock, TX when he was nine. He later moved to Slaton, Texas where he attended schools there and always considered that to be his hometown and where his roots were.

Dennis served in the US Army from 1968-1976. He was a helicopter crew chief/door gunner in the Vietnam War. He was awarded two Purple Hearts, two Bronze Stars with a V for Valor, and twenty eight Air Medals for his combat flights.

Upon returning home he married his high school sweetheart Roni Kitten on July 3, 1970. In 1972 he served a year in South Korea crewing for General Knowles. He ended his military career at Fort Sill, Oklahoma as a Specialist 5.  His talents and skills with horses and cattle led him to do ranch work for Bushnell Brahman Farms in Oklahoma. He worked with his brother in the oil fields in South Texas for a time and then returned to aviation in 1979. He worked for PHI in Lafayette, Louisiana, Agusta International in Saudi Arabia, and was Gulf Coast Supervisor for Evergreen Helicopters in Galveston, Texas. In 1988 Evergreen sent him to help fight forest fires that raged through the Yellowstone National Park. Also while employed by Evergreen he and a pilot helped rescue three men from a burning fishing vessel in the Gulf. He jumped from the helicopter into the flame covered water and pulled the captain to safety. For his heroism he was awarded the US Coast Guard Silver Lifesaving Medal.

He also worked as an operator for Formosa Plastics Inc. in Point Comfort, Texas and then once again returned to aviation in 2003 working and retiring at Bell Helicopter in Amarillo, Texas were he maintained the rescue helicopter for the Osprey MV22 fleet.

Dennis was a loving and caring husband and father. A very hard worker, whose hands could fix anything. He was a generous person always ready to help others. He was a great story teller and always the life of any occasion. He loved adventure and the great outdoors. Hunting, fly fishing, camping, riding his Harley, working in his gardens, and watching a good movie were among his favorite things. He loved his God Jehovah the Creator of everything good and loved sharing his faith and knowledge of the Bible with others. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father.

He is survived by his much loved Dad, Barney Myers; sister Beverley Singleton; and brother Vodie Brooks; also by his wife, Veronica (Roni) Kitten Brooks; daughters Brandy White and husband Steven, and Jennifer Brooks; his grandchildren Tyler and Hunter White, Cory, Lauren, and Leo Regal.
