Douglas Lynn Marr was born on June 3, 1947, to Chester and Fern Marr in Deshler, Nebraska. He grew up in Oak, Nebraska, where he attended the Nelson School District. During his school years, Doug was an active member of the FFA, proudly serving as chapter president before graduating.
Following high school, Doug enlisted in the United States Army, where he honorably served as a Huey helicopter pilot during the Vietnam War. As a very highly decorated veteran, Doug served his country with courage, dedication, and distinction — a source of great pride throughout his life. Yet despite his many honors and accomplishments, he remained humble and never boasted about the recognition he earned through his service.
After returning home, Doug pursued his passion for veterinary medicine and earned his degree from Kansas State University in 1977. While in college, he met his first wife, Pam, and together they welcomed a son, Tye. Doug later moved to Chino, California, where he worked in an equine veterinary practice.
On Valentine’s Day in 1979, Doug met Cheryl, the love of his life. The two married later that same year and built a beautiful family together when Doug lovingly adopted Cheryl’s children, Sheri and Robi. In 1980, the family relocated to Guymon, Oklahoma.
Doug dedicated more than 20 years of service to the USDA as a food inspector before continuing his career as a food auditor, a role that allowed him to travel across the country, and met many people who he grew close that gave him the nickname “doc”. He retired in 2024.
Doug spent his final years surrounded by his wife, family, and the horses he cherished so deeply. After a lengthy illness, he passed away peacefully surrounded by everyone whom he loved on May 23, 2026, in Amarillo, Texas, and went home to be with Jesus.
Doug was known for his genuine spirit, kindness, and unwavering willingness to help others. He never met a stranger and had a gift for making everyone feel welcome, valued, and loved. Known for his quick wit and playful sense of humor, Doug could always bring laughter and light to those around him.
His passions included traveling with Cheryl and their grandchildren, serving faithfully in his church through baptisms, marriages, preaching, and helping anyone in need — whether it was assisting with medical bills, putting food on the table for a family, or simply being there to listen when someone needed a caring ear. He also took great pride in preserving the King and Doc Bar bloodlines through his lifelong dedication to breeding cutting horses.
More than anything, Doug was devoted to his family. He was the kind of man who showed up — no matter what was needed. He opened his home, his heart, and his life to his grandchildren, helping raise and care for them as if they were his own children, never because he had to, but simply because that was who he was. His love was steady, selfless, and unconditional, and the impact he made on those children will carry on for generations.
Some of the fondest memories shared with Doug were over a cup of coffee, around the family dinner table hearing his infamous question, “Are you going to finish that?” (Because all of the kids would place napkins over their unfinished food), or sitting on the porch enjoying a cigar while listening to his stories, advice, and laughter. He was straightforward, honest, hardworking, and carried a heart full of compassion. Those around him rarely went five minutes without learning something new from him. Doug had a rare gift for making people feel safe, supported, and deeply cared for.
Doug’s love, wisdom, strength, and guidance leave a lasting imprint on all who were fortunate enough to know and love him. Though his family and friend's hearts are broken, they find comfort knowing his legacy of love, faith, service, and generosity will live through every life he touched.
Doug is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years, Cheryl Marr; his brother Wesley Marr and sister-in-law Leann marr; his children Sheri, Robi and wife Amy, and Tye and wife Angela; grandchildren Sarah and partner Josh, Kolby and wife Whitney, Kelsie and husband Alex, Christian and wife Alissa, Jonathan, Sarah Grace, and special granddaughter Keely; great-grandchildren Kalia, Kamron and partner Mylee, Ryleigh, and Rawlin; great-great-grandchildren Blakely, Ellie Maree, Bentley, and Max; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Chester and Fern Marr; his brother Kirby; his sister Kathy; son-in-law Gerry Stephens; and granddaughter Amanda.
As per Doug's wishes, there will be not be a memorial or funeral service. The family kindly asks that you honor Doug by sharing your memories of him over a cup of coffee allowing his legacy to live on.
