Larry Albert Pettit

October 1, 1946 — November 27, 2025

Amarillo

Larry Albert Pettit, 79, of Amarillo, passed peacefully on November 27, 2025 at Texas Specialty Hospital.

Service details are pending at this time.

Larry was born on October 1, 1946, in Taylor, Texas, the only child of Clarence “Peck” Irving and Margaret Ann (Carlson) Pettit. He graduated from Amarillo High with his close friends Terry and Dory Funk Jr. He got married and they moved to California where Larry enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. Larry wanted to make the Marine Corp his career, but following being wounded while overseas in Vietnam, he was forced to return home. He attempted to re-enlist once his injury healed, but the damage was too great and he medically retired.

Not one to let an injury stop him, Larry then began to pursue his second love, singing and performing country music. Larry and his first wife packed the kids up and moved across the country to Nashville, Tennessee where he would spend the next 30 years performing; while his wife became a hairstylist to the stars.

Larry got a call one day that his father, Peck, had fallen ill and the outlook was not good. Once again, Larry packed up and made his way back to the Texas Panhandle so he could care for his aging parents. Not long after his return to Texas, he met Phyllis and the two were married. Unfortunately, shortly after they were married, Peck passed away in Larry’s arms. He decided to stay in the panhandle to continue to care for his mother, who lived with the family until her passing. He continued to perform locally in the band “Real Country” until he finally decided to call it a career and hung up his guitar. Larry would still play occasionally when asked by fellow musicians or establishments.

Larry is preceded in death by both parents. Those left to cherish his memories are his beloved wife, Phyllis, and her sons, Ryan and Royce Fithen and their families.
