Vernon Charles Smith Sr

Vernon Charles Smith Sr, 76, of Amarillo passed peacefully in his home surrounded by his family on December 31, 2023.

The family will receive guests on Friday, January 12, 2024, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Angel Funeral Home, 2209 S. Arthur. Rosary will begin at 6 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 2500 S. Bolton St., on Saturday, January 13, 2023, at 10 a.m. with Father Nicholas Gerber presiding. Interment will follow in Llano Cemetery with military honors by Amarillo Volleys for Veterans.

Vernon was born November 1, 1947, in Lamesa, Texas where he attended school and graduated from Lamesa High School. Following graduation, Vernon enlisted in the United States Army and proudly served his country achieving the rank of Sergeant. In 1997, he married Ofelia Reyes. They renewed their vows at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Levelland, Texas in 2010. He and Ofelia were devoted members of Blessed Sacrament Church.

Vernon was a wonderful man who was incredibly loving and caring. He was devoted to his family and was simply the best. Vernon made many family meals and loved to cook any chance he could. When he got the chance, he and Ofelia would sneak off to the casino where he would gamble a little bit, one of his favorite hobbies. He also enjoyed going to Bingo. Of course, anyone who knew Vernon knew his passion for The Dallas Cowboys. Vernon was a great husband, father, grandfather, uncle and person overall.

Vernon is preceded in death by his parents and sisters. Those left to cherish his memories are his beloved wife Ofelia, daughters Leslie Ann, Christina, and Toni, sons Vernon Jr, Franky, Eric, Oscar, and Kendall, brother Mart; 19 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren, as well as many extended family and dear friends.
