Obituary

Zoila Maria Hernandez, 79, of Amarillo, Texas, passed away peacefully on July 5, 2026.

Zoila was born on January 12, 1947, in Weslaco, Texas, to Catarino and Hilaria Vela. On March 12, 1976, she married Melchor S. Hernandez, in Dimmitt, Texas. Their marriage was a beautiful testament to enduring love and devotion, and after nearly sixty one years together, they still adored one another. Zoila was a devoted wife and mother.

Family was the center of Zoila's life. She loved her family immensely and found her greatest joy in spending time with those she cherished most. Her warm heart, caring nature, and unwavering devotion will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.

In her younger years, Zoila worked in the trucking industry as part of a grain harvesting crew, demonstrating the strong work ethic and resilience that defined her life.

Zoila also had a joyful spirit and enjoyed the simple pleasures in life. She had a special love for music, especially the songs of Selena, whose music brought her great happiness. She loved the beauty and peace of the ocean and delighted in collecting seashells, treasures that reminded her of the serenity she found by the water.

Zoila's legacy of love and kindness will continue to live on through all who were blessed to know her.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Jesse Reyes Vela; a son, Daniel Hernandez; a granddaughter, Ashley Hernandez; and a daughter-in-law Roxann Hernandez.

Zoila is survived by her husband Melchor; three sons, Melchor Hernandez, Jr, David Hernandez and wife Marta, and Juan Hernandez; a brother Noe "Poncho" Vela and wife Antonia; grandchildren Victoria Baldivia, Xavier Hernandez, Nathan Hernandez, Froto Hernandez and Ayla Clemente; three great-grandchildren, Valorie and Jesus Barrientos and Jordan R. Hernandez; her great great grandchildren,Ventara , Rosalee and Cecelia Clemente and Ashely Bell; the girls she loved as her own, Stephanie Chesson and Victoria Poole: Stephanie's children, Timothy, Mercedes and Stephen Acosta.
